The Tokyo Marathon 2025 kicked off the global marathon season of the year. As the first World Marathon Major of the year, the trends here may indicate what is to expect in the remaining WMMs. We’ve analyzed the timing data and here we share some of the insights we’ve found interesting.
The international flavor of Tokyo Marathon 2025 is vividly captured in the nationality data. The marathon giants like Ethiopia and Kenya feature prominently with their top finishes, but many other countries also made their mark.
Runners from a total of 123 countries finished the Marathon, making it one of the most diverse and global marathons.
The chart below shows the top 10 nationalities by runner count excluding Japan which hosted the event.
USA leads significantly with 2,291 finishers. Asian countries also feature prominently; for example, TPE had 1,018 runners, while China had 814. European nations like GBR (765), GER (326), ITA (265), and ESP (242) had strong participation too. India stood at 22nd spot with 123 finishers.
If we slice the data by Continents, with 4,238 finishers, Asia tops the list (even if we exclude Japan). North America follows with 3,050 finishers. Europe, with 2,899 runners, shows strong participation too. Although Africa’s count (88) is much lower in absolute numbers, and these are mostly elite runners. Oceania has a modest participation (340 finishers), dominated by Australia and New Zealand. South America’s 636 finishers add to the international flavor of the race, with countries like Brazil and Colombia leading the regional participation.
Tokyo is one of the fastest marathons in the world. There are 26 runners who finished under 2:10, and a whopping 1647 runners finished under 3 hours. Imagine finishing a marathon with a time of 3 hours, but still ranked 1647 🙂
There 123 finishers from India which is , with an average finish time 4:38. This number is quite low when compared to other WMM events. Tokyo either is not very popular with Indian runners, or the entry is quite hard. Here are the top 10 finishers from India.
